What is Belviq & Belviq XR?
Belviq is manufactured by Eisai Co. and came to the U.S. market in 2012 as a weight loss drug. The weight loss drug was prescribed to adults that are obese and have weight related medical issues that prohibit them from traditional weight loss from diet and exercise. The Belviq weight loss drug includes active ingredients that trigger chemical signals within the body to eat less, resulting in the patient losing weight. During pre-market trials on lab rats, the studies indicated there could be an increased risk of cancer tumors and the FDA ordered an additional study. After the recent clinical trials with 12,000 users of the weight loss drug over a 5-year period, the side effects of taking the Belviq drug does include an increased risk of cancer.
On February 13, 2020, the FDA after new clinical trials announced the recall of the weight loss drug Belviq after the reports concluded patients having an increased risk of cancer tumors that include pancreatic, lung, and colorectal. The FDA reports the risks were significant in that the agency has taken the steps to call for the removal of the drug from the United States market. Eisai Co., the manufacturer of the drug has voluntarily removed the weight loss drug from the market.
